PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY - RULE OF THIRDS

June 2, 2016

Anyone in the art industry understands the rule of thirds.  If your interested in learning it, here is how we photograph our subjects unless we break the rule.  After rules are meant to be broken sometimes!  Imagine, a grid made up of 9 squares which can be divided into thirds - horizontally and/or vertically.

The idea in using the rule of thirds is placing your subject in 1/3 and/or 2/3rds of the image emphasizing the negative and positive space within the portrait or photography image.  The rule brings four important parts to your artistically processed image.  The lines allow focal points of interest, balance, while help the viewer interact with the image more naturally.  New photographers believe that all portraits must be centered, however studies have shown that the eye finds it more pleasing when the subject focal point is slightly off centered.  Placing your subject center can lead to awkward shots sometimes!

A skilled portrait photographer will go into their session knowing their surrounding environment.  They will know their points of interests; taking their plan implementing their art piece with perfection.  The Rule of Thirds is a great composition tool adding to many other techniques that drive images to become masterpieces.  One of the greatest tools from my undergrad at California State University, San Bernardino came from my graphic design course in composition.  These techniques can be carried over into portrait photography even while placing multiple subjects at wedding ceremonies utilizing the negative space, focal points, subject sizes and shapes.  It's a good starting point for designing my portrait photography art work into points of interest through artistically beautifully enhanced defined portrait images.

To learn more about my background in the arts you can contact me anytime.  I'm always seeking new challenges!  Have a great idea for a portrait image?  Something outside the box, I'm always looking for unique artistically enhanced graphic photography ideas to challenge my graphic design skills.
